Gluten Allergy Sign & Symptoms That Should Be Aware

Dr Harris Steinman of Allergy Society of South Africa's Working Group on Childhood Asthma, South Africa, said that a gluten allergy or also called wheat allergy, is a condition that is rare but can happen to anyone. Allergic reactions to gluten usually appear within minutes to a few hours after eating or inhaling wheat products. This allergic reaction involving IgE antibodies present in the blood. Normally, the immune system consists of white blood cells and antibodies will attack any foreign substance that enters the body that are considered dangerous. In the case of gluten allergy, IgE antibodies react to the protein gluten which is considered as allergens (allergy-causing substances). This has caused an allergic reaction. The only way to cope with a gluten allergy is to avoid all foods that contain gluten, especially wheat.

What is gluten allergy?
To know about it, we must know what gluten is. Gluten is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related grain species, including barley and rye. Gluten gives elasticity to dough, helping it rise and keep its shape and often gives the final product a chewy texture. Gluten is used in cosmetics, hair products, and other dermatological preparations.

Gluten is the composite of a gliadin and a glutenin, which is conjoined with starch in the endosperm of various grass-related grains. The prolamin and glutelin from wheat (gliadin, which is alcohol-soluble, and glutenin, which is only soluble in dilute acids or alkalis) constitute about 80% of the protein contained in wheat fruit. Being insoluble in water, they can be purified by washing away the associated starch. Worldwide, gluten is a source of protein, both in foods prepared directly from sources containing it, and as an additive to foods otherwise low in protein.

Gluten allergy sign and symptoms

In some people, gluten can cause allergies. In addition to gluten, there are several other types of proteins that can cause allergies in sensitive people. Four major protein found in wheat, rye, and barley are albumin, globulin, gliadin, and glutenin or better known as gluten. Symptoms of gluten allergy and the severity vary in each person. People who are sensitive to gluten generally will experience itching, swelling, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting, or asthma. In the most severe level, a gluten allergy can be life threatening.

Gluten allergy is generally easy to diagnose. The symptoms of allergies can be easily recognized as already highlighted previously. It's just so much food made from wheat so it is difficult to find where the real problem lies. The doctor should take blood to confirm the exact cause of the allergy is gluten or other reasons. If someone is very sensitive to gluten, the best solution is to eliminate wheat and its derivatives from the daily diet list.

However, if it is not too severe allergic reactions, reducing the amount of grain consumed and taking anti-allergy medication will solve the problem. Intolerance to gluten known as Celiac (Coeliac) Disease. The disease is caused by a genetic disorder that affects the immune system.

When gluten is consumed by people with Celiac, which is the mucosal lining of the small intestine becomes damaged. When this happens, vitamins and other essential nutrients can not be absorbed properly. Gluten allergy symptoms are different in children and adults. In children, the symptoms will include abdominal distention, impaired growth, irritability, muscle growth is stunted, malabsorption, and decreased appetite.

In adults, gluten allergy symptoms, including diarrhea, significant weight loss, constipation, cramping, and bloating. To determine whether someone has a gluten allergy or not, the doctor should do blood tests to make sure. People with gluten allergies need to eat nutritious foods and contain a variety of nutrients such as niacin, iron, thiamin, riboflavin, chromium, magnesium, selenium, folacin, molybdenum, and phosphorus. With proper care and diet, a person with a gluten allergy can enjoy a variety of delicious foods without experiencing an annoying allergy symptoms.
